About Hairdressers Co-Operative Society Ltd in Adelaide
Hairdressers’ Co-operative Society Ltd was formed by the Master Hairdressers’ Association in 1944 for the purpose of supplying hairdressing products and equipment to its members at the best possible price and then returning any end of year profits back to the members. In 1950 the Co-op purchased 237 Grote Street, Adelaide. This property was previously the home of Sir George Kingston, Surveyor General to Colonel Light, principal architect for the design and layout of the City of Adelaide. Since then, the building has been demolished, re-built and then renovated to the current showroom and warehouse. The combination of a dedicated Board of Directors, management, staff and, in particular, the support and loyalty of members has grown the Co-operative from the original 74 members to over 4000 today.
